Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone is the original National Park - in the world. The men sent to survey the place were the ones to propose that it be set aside for the nation - in 1872! The trouble with Yellowstone is like the trouble with the Grand Canyon - how do you stop taking pictures? It is actually worse in Yellowstone because the range of subjects is so much greater. The variety in the thermal features (geysers, fumaroles, etc.) is remarkable, given that it is all created by the same water and steam, filtered through different compositions of soil and rock. We gave up trying to pick a favorite, and made a collage.
The "Tetons" below, and these Yellowstone pictures, were photographed in the spring. Guests traveling with us for the Northbound Tour in May of 2014 can expect similar snow-capped scenes. Our two autumn tours are less predictable, but the odds of encountering snow are very high. So, these photos, though taken at a different time of year, are not too far removed from expected conditions in the fall.
We can't resist one more photo, but after this we really must move on.
Grand Teton National Park
We can explore Grand Teton on the way to Jackson, Wyoming, or during our day there, or both. Only three days separate Jackson WY and Aspen CO, and both places include an "unscheduled" day (unscheduled just means you can wander off on your own if you choose to do so). However, despite being mountain resorts with both summer and winter attractions, Jackson and Aspen are quite different, so repetition will not be a problem.
